Transylvania Shawl
No purls!
Transylvania is a 2-color, no purl, top-down shawl knit with fingering weight yarn.
The main section of the shawl is knit in alternating stripes of 2 rows of each of 2 colors in a mosaic slip stitch pattern. The mosaic technique helps break up potential pooling of colors if a self-striping or hand-painted yarn is used as the contrasting color.
The written instructions include the stitch counts for each repeat of the pattern with convenient check-off boxes to help keep track of the pattern. Complete row-by-row instructions are included as well as a chart.
The edging is simple crochet, however, the same stitches can be accomplished using knitting needles -- a photo tutorial and detailed instructions are included. Full pattern is 7 pages. The final 2 pages are the tutorial to complete the edging with knitting needles. Those who are proficient in simple crochet will not need to print the final 2 pages. Also, page 5 is a chart, so knitters who prefer to knit from written instructions will not need to print this page.

Finished Size (blocked): 60" (152.5 cm) tip to tip and 19" (48 cm) deep. Finished size may vary depending of the severity of blocking.
Gauge: In mosaic st pattern, 28 sts and 44 rows = 4" (10 cm) before blocking
Skills Required: Basic knitting sts, yarn over (yo), k2tog, k1tbl, slipping sts; Basic crochet sts (ch, slip st, and sc -- can also be completed with knitting needles, instructions included)
Yarn: Fingering weight yarn, 340 yards/310 meters of MC and 255 yards/230 meters of CC. (This allows 10% extra for variance in different yarns, and it includes yarn used for gauge swatch.)
Sample was knit with 1 skein of Malabrigo Sock (MC - #141 Dewberry), and 1 skein of Miss Babs Cosmic (CC - Mayhem Babette)
Note: Yarn amounts are only guaranteed when working pattern to the specified gauge.
Needles: US 6 (4.0 mm) 32" (80 cm) or longer circular needles US 5 (3.75 mm) straight needles or crochet hook, size US E-4 (3.5 mm)
